However on opening the box (and I don't know how long after arrival this was) it turned out that the top 5 quilts were not there. So this could be either a random theft or a planned one. And just between us I am very much inclined towards a planned one or insider job. I mean, have you ever heard of a casual thief closing up a box to look just like before. I think not!! As these quilts get shipped regularly both by the European Patchwork people and by their courier company I am very much inclined to it happening at the Italian end, either by someone at the townhall or one of the people (yes, indeed quilters) in charge of the exhibition there. This is only my supposition, mind!! Needless to say the fact that someone signed for the box, certifying it to be intact, won't help Mr. Crupi with his insurance claim but that is firmly his problem and to be honest the longer that takes the better I will like it, as this means it is still my quilt and my decisions, should anything turn up and I will ask no questions if my quilt is returned by some miracle.

I seem to also have been of great help to Mr. Crupi in telling him what to do to publicize all this but I am not holding my breath re the speed with which he might be doing it!!!!! This does just goes to show that you can do everything right but things can still go very, very wrong. The box did not even have a tracking number although in this case it would have made no difference. But I certainly would not want my quilts transported like this in future. Also this theft must have taken place well before the 12th Feb when the exhibition was meant to open, yet I was only informed on the morning of the 16th!!! My quilt, my theft so in my opinion I should have been the first to know together with the other 4 quilters concerned!!

Any more developments will also be mentioned on my website. I thought I would pass all this on as words of caution. So far none of the other quilters as far as I can tell, have contacted any of the websites or mags I have (which include all the European quilters guilds and the lost quilt site), probably waiting for the European Patchwork Meeting to sort things out or because they simply have no idea what to do. I just hope that me keeping as many quilters as I can reach, informed might be of some assistance in the future and also serve as a warning that however organized you are and however you try and do everything possible to save guard your quilt, once you hand matters over to other people you can't really trust them to do the same!
